South Asia is an incredibly diverse region with different traditions, cultures and as we’ll explore today, foods. The definition for South Asia I have chosen for this website includes the countries of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka (as seen in the map shown above). Sadly, I cannot include all of the cuisines of South Asia for the sake of simplicity. I chose to make this website to illustrate the diversity and the beauty of different kinds of South Asian cuisines. When we in the west think of South Asian cuisine, our minds immediately go to staple dishes such as Butter Chicken. While that may be a very delicious and influential dish, there are other South Asian foods that I would implore you, the reader to try. This site will have an explanation of the ethnic origins of the dishes, links to quick step-by-step recipes of each dish, visual aids, and my lovely, sarcastic, humor.

Most of the dishes I mention on this list can be served with either rice or flatbreads. And when you read my website you may be wondering what those flat breads are so to help with that I have linked a professional source to Indian flatbreads right here .
South Asian cuisines are also known for having lots of spices. Of course the main reason that the Europeans started to trade with Asia was because they had a demand for spices. And that trade eventually led to colonialism and the South Asian food cuisines we see today.
