Super Smash Brothers Ultimate is a fighting game with popular characters such as Mario, Luigi, Sonic, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Cloud, Joker, and more! The game houses 89 characters, over 100 stages, a campaign, thousands of music pieces and remixes from original composers (including Megalovania from Toby Fox), paid DLC characters, and many different game modes. Let me showcase the game modes first!
There are a plethora of different game modes ranging from strictly competitive to casual and crazy, so let's take a dive in, shall we?
The regular Smash Bros experience! You can change rulesets to have items and wacky stages with fun gimmicks, you can do free for alls, team battles, custom ideas, the sky's the limit!
World of Light is the campaign mode. All the characters except 1 have been taken by Galeem, a being of light who wants to conquer the world. You must free spirits and characters from the light of Galeem and save the world as a character named Kirby. Can you save them all?
Deal as much damage as you can to a sandbag and hit it with the baseball bat or another mighty blow in your characters moveset and make it go as far as you can! Each character starts with a baseball bat that deals insane knockback and can send the sandbag at blazing speeds, but some characters have moves that can outpower the bat. Find out combos and moves you can do that will get you a lot of percent before your 10 seconds are up!
Try out moves and combos in this vast sandbox! You can try out combos, as said before, you can try out items, see how much a move can do and send opponents, you can do anything here!
The last but not least game mode is Online. You can fight random people in quickplay, and depending on your GSP (Global Smash Power), you can play on Elite Smash where you can fight the world's best! If you don't want to fight random people and you want to play with a friend from far away, you can open a Battle Arena and you can share the ID and password and your friend can join!
There are 89 characters in the game, but they are mainly divided up into 3 subcategories.
These characters have strong attacks and cannot be killed very easily, but they tend to have a large hurtbox and can be comboed very easily.
Medium weights have both traits as lightweights and heavyweights, but not as pure. They can do some combos, some killing moves, but overall, they're in the middle.
Lightweights tend to have smaller hitboxes and can pull off very good strings of combos, but they can be killed very easily, much more so than Heavyweights. Their small hitbox is very utilized by players, and there is actually a term for a move that makes your hitbox extremely small using a Backward Aerial, specifically Pikachu, called "Pancaking", because they are smaller than a pancake.
Each character has their own unique stage. Some have traits that others do not, such as stage hazards and platforms. Stage hazards are objects that can either move, disappear, damage players, or heal players during the duration of the match. The stage you choose does not have to be the stage to play during the entire game. If you turn on Stage Morph, randomly in the match, the stage will turn into another stage.
The DLC characters in the game are some of the best, such as Joker Steve Minecraft, and Kazuya.
Joker is from Persona 5 and was the 2nd DLC character, right after Piranha Plant. This character has reliable combos and a comeback mechanic where they summon Arsene, Joker's persona in Persona 5. This gives a boost to all of his moves, making them kill much easier.
Kazuya is the 12th character to join smash, right after Pyra and Mythra from Xenoblade Chronicles. Kazuya is from another fighting game called Tekken 7. Tekken is a more traditional fighting game with input moves and multiple buttons needed to be pressed at specific times to do a certain move. This is reflected in Kazuya's smash moveset, as he is the character with the most moves. Most characters have 4 tilt attacks, 5 if you include jab. Kazuya has 13 tilt attacks including jab. One of the moves is called Electric Wind God Fist, which is praised for being the move with the most hitstun (hitstun is the amount of time a character cannot act after getting hit) and is versatile for combos. Some have even found it can combo into itself. Not just once, not twice, 6 times.
Steve is the 8th character to join the game, right after Min Min from ARMS, and Sephiroth from Final Fantasy. Steve has difficult to perform, but very rewarding combos, kill confirms, and a very good moveset. Steve also has the ability to place blocks that can stop characters from recovering offstage, or provide Steve with the ability to build back, or provide the necessary cover to mine for materials, like Iron, Gold, Redstone, Diamonds, and building materials. This, however, has limits. Blocks can only be used within a certain area to prevent Steve from recovering from the farthest depths.
You should play the game, it has brought me some of my best moments and best days, and it overall has been an amazing experience. I highly recommend you buy it, it is in my opinion, highly worth it!
