Proper nouns and beginnings of sentences should almost always be capitalized, but sometimes it can be hard to tell a proper noun from a regular one, and . Remember, proper nouns are very specific persons, places, or things. An example of a proper noun would be 'California', while a noun could be the word 'state'.
Punctuation is one of the most important aspects of writing. It can be used to separate sentences and tell one thing apart from another. An example of a time when punctuation is needed could be a sentence like this:
"Im eating you"
Without punctuation, this makes the person speaking sound like a cannibal. However, if we fix the grammar, it makes much more sense.
"I'm eating, you?"
See? Now it sounds like this person is adressing another while eating, rather than implying the less morally correct option. It's important to use punctuation in your writing.
Punctuation meanings:
This list does not cover all punctuation marks, however these are the ones that are used most commonly used.
Homohpones are words that sound the same, but are spelled differently and mean different things. An example would be their, there, and they're. It's not unheard of for people to confuse homophones with each other. It's actually quite the opposite. This is one of the most common errors people make
This issue isn't directly a grammar mistake, however I believe it to be incredibly important. You know those times when you're reading over your writing and find yourself using the same word over and over again? You probably think that it's annoying to read, right? Well that's what we're talking about. Writing applications will most likely not point this out for you, but if you have one that does then you only have to worry about this on hand-written stories.
There's a good chance that you notice this very easily because it will usually stick out like a sore thumb, unless it's an in-between word such as 'it', 'and', or 'is'. Words like these are less noticeable and therefore, less of a problem. However, more eye-catching words such as 'significant', 'exciting', 'uncomfortable', etcetera, can be bigger issues. To solve this, I'd reccomend using Thesaurus.com to find different words with the same or similar meanings.
A run on sentence is a sentence longer than the standard length without the correct punctuation. This issue often occurs when a writer wants to preserve a paragraph, and creates a run on sentence in the process. Another instance is that an author simply forgets to add punctuation and then doesn't realize that they made a mistake. The third possibility is when someone writes a sentence, but doesn't know how to add commas or periods to make it seem less wordy and irritating. In this case, the writer may end up rewriting the sentence due to their inability to correct their mistake, or leave it alone despite how bothersome it may be.
