Hundreds of years ago, people started domesticating wild animals. The word domesticate means taming and training wild animals so that they can suit human needs. People used these helpers to farm, carry goods, and obtain food and supplies, such as milk and wool. Dogs, sheep, cows, and horses are some of the many wild animals that were domesticated.
Domesticating dogs made a huge impact on people today. Because they are so loyal and intelligent, it was a great choice to tame them and have them as companions. Their highly developed minds are what make them great hunters, workers, and overall amazing animals.

Sheep are very useful animals for one main reason - their wool. People many years ago used it and many people still use it today. Sheep were slaughtered for meat as well. Along with dogs, sheep were very useful.

Cows were mainly used as a food source. They produce milk and are slaughtered for meat. These animals were domesticated and travel and graze in herds. Now people use their hides for rugs and/or fabric.

Horses were not used for food or goods, but they were used as a mode of transportation. People would travel miles riding horses to deliver goods or a message. Horses were also used in wars. Soldiers rode them or they pulled chariots.
