The dosa is a crepe-style flatbread that is an extremely popular breakfast food in India that originated in the southern region of Tamil Nadu. This dish has recorded orgins dating back to the 1st century CE. Dosa is pronounced as "dohsah" (much easier than the others on this website). The batter for making the dosa is made out of fermented black lentils. You must then spread the batter on a pan and let it cook, flipping the dosa after one side becomes golden brown. When both sides of the dosa becomes a golden brown color, then your dosa is ready. However, where dosas differ from crepes is what is put inside. Crepes normally have a sweet filling of fruits in their interior, but dosas normally have a sauteed, spiced potato mix in their interior. Dosas are normally served with a soupy side known as sambar (which is at the bottom of the image). Sambar is a lentil-based soup that is cooked with broth from the tamarind plant. Along with sambar, different types of chutneys (sauces) are served.
