The Texas Poppy Mallow

About

Callirhoe Scabruiscula is a rare species of flowering plant in the mallow family known as Texas Poppy Flower. It is endemic to Texas, where it is known from about 10 populations in the deep sands along the colorado River. Much of its habitat has been lost, which is the reason it was federally listed as an edangered species in 1981.

Why is it endangered?

Their habitat has been degraded and destroyed by a number of human activities, including agricultre, sand mining, development, road construction, collectors, and application of herbicides and insecticides

How can we save them

All aerial applications of Arsenal herbicide within ΒΌ mile of Tivoli or Brownfield sands in Coke, Runnels and Mitchell counties must be made by rotary wing aircraft using controlled droplet nozzles and boom configurations and air speeds below 60 mph to achieve an average spray droplet size of 1000 microns or greater. A 60 foot aerial spray buffer in topography or lateral distance from the Tivoli and Brownfield sands must be maintained at all times. Aerial spraying must be done between August 15 and October 15, the dormant season for the Texas poppy-mallow. Persons using Arsenal must comply with all applicable directions, restrictions, precautions and worker safety rules found on this labeling and that of the federally registered Arsenal herbicide label.

Life

The Texas poppy-mallow was listed as endangered in 1981. The Texas poppy-mallow grows only in specific areas of deep sandy soil along the upper Colorado River. It is endangered because of habitat loss due to farming, pasture planting, sand mining and urban development. Because it has such beautiful flowers, the poppy-mallow is threatened by people picking the flowers or collecting plants for their garden. If you see this plant, don't pick the flowers or disturb the area where it is growing.
