SDG 1 is all about eradicating poverty, but in all its forms, it remains one of the greatest challenges facing humanity. While the number of people living in extreme poverty dropped by more than half between 1990 and 2015, too many are still struggling for the most basic human needs like foods, water, and shelters (SDG, 2020).
As of 2015, about 736 Million people still lived on less than $1.90 a day, many lack food, clean drinkable water and sanitation. Rapid growth in countries such as China and India has lifted millions out of poverty, but progress has still been uneven. Progress has also been limited in other countries or regions, such as Sount Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, which accounts for almost 80 percent of those living in extreme poverty, meaning even more work is needed to bring people out of poverty (SDG, 2020).
Goal 1 calls for an end to poverty in all its manifestations by 2030. It also aims to ensure social protection for the poor and vulnerable, increase access to basic services and support people harmed by climate-related extreme events and other economic, social and environmental shocks and disasters (SDG, 2020).
