Dogs are used by different people for different work. For example, firefighters use the Dalmatian because, a long time ago, Dalmatians were trained to run in front of the engines to clear a path for the firefighters so they could get to the fires quickly. They are often picked by firefighters today because of their heroism in the past. Another example is the Belgain Malinois, most commonly used by the military because of their ability to skydive. They are also lighter than dogs like German Shepherds which makes it easier for the parachutes. Their light weight also helps with agility.
Some dogs are made for fighting. Dogs like the Rottweiler and Doberman Pinscher are bred as guard dogs, while the Rhodesian Ridgeback was bred to hunt lions, and the Akita to guard Japanese emperors alongside the samurai. Other breeds such as Bloodhounds are incredible trackers, able to smell, specifically blood, from miles away. Hence the name.
