Luray Caverns is located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Discovered in 1878, it is the largest series of caverns in the East. Following a draft that blew out a candle, a group of four men and a 13 year old boy dug for four hours before being able to slide down into the cave. It's open every day of the year, so it's easy to find a day to go. The cave temperture is a contant 55 degrees Fareheit but with the high humidity, it feels more like 65 degrees.
Luray is known for such formations as Saracen's Tent, Giant's Hall, and most of all, the Stalacpipe Organ, the world's largest muscial intstrument. It literally makes stalactites sing by gently tapping them throughout three acres of the caverns.
