Overview Setting Up The Board Pawn Knight Bishop Rook Queen King

Chess Basics

Pre-Game

Before starting a game of chess, it is important to first set up the chess board. After the chess board is set up properly, the game can begin.

Game Mechanics

Each of your chess pieces have a way of capturing an opponent's piece. Once a piece is captured, it is moved off the playing field and becomes unplayable for the rest of the game.

A game of chess is won either if the enemy player forfeits or if the enemy king is captured. To end the game, the opponent's king must not be able to escape the capture by moving around or protected by other pieces by capturing the attacker or blocking the path of attack. This is the only way a game can be directly won.

Chess Pieces

Besides the king, no other chess piece directly affects the outcome of the game. There are 6 chess types of chess pieces on the board at the start of the game. These include:

Piece Values

The values of pieces are variable and often based on the player's strategy or playstyle. These values are purely based on my opinion, take them with a grain of salt.

Pieces Values
Pawn 1 pawn
Knight 3 pawns
Bishop 3.5 pawns
Rook 5 pawns
Queen 9 pawns
King Everything
