Overview | Setting Up The Board | Pawn | Knight | Bishop | Rook | Queen | King |
---|
The king is a chess piece located next to the queen in the middle of the back row. The king has a limited moveset and if it is captured, the game ends.
The king can move one tile in any direction unless the tile is blocked by an ally piece. If the king lands on a tile an enemy piece is on, the enemy piece is captured.
When the king is in the line of sight (an enemy piece is able to capture the king in the next turn), a check is initiated and the king is forced to move out of the enemy's line of sight. This can be done by using a piece to block the enemy's line of sight, moving the king, or by capturing the enemy piece threatening the king.
When a king is in the line of sight(an enemy piece is able to capture the king in the next turn) and cannot escape the check in one move, this is the considered a checkmate and the player whose king is being threatened loses the game. Other than a forfeit, this is the only way a chess game can be won.
