When Marnie was there (anime)

When marnie was there is a movie of Studio Ghibli. It's based on a 1967 novel of the same title by Joan G.

What is it about

The film shifts the setting to a Japanese coastal town, where a lonely and troubled foster child, Anna, has been sent to stay with relatives. She grows fascinated with an apparently deserted mansion, where she befriends a mysterious western blonde girl of her own age called Marnie, who asks her to promise to keep their secrets from everyone. As the summer progresses, Anna spends more time with Marnie, and eventually Anna learns the truth about her family. Is Marnie a ghost? A hallucination? A projection of Anna’s own longings?

Why should you watch it?

To be honest, it came as no surprise that the animation of When Marnie Was There was just as beautiful as all the other Ghibli films I have watched, perhaps even more so because of the setting. This film was set in a small seaside town, but there was also grass, forests, and marshlands. Another really important reason to watch it is the Character Development. Anna, the main character, is such a different person when the movie starts and when it ends. She goes through such a subtle yet noticeable development that you hardly see it happening but at the same time you really do. This girl is harbouring so much emotional turmoil and throughout the movie she confronts this in both little and big ways

The Story. There is something so incredibly special about the story of When Marnie Was There. I honestly can’t say too much because I loved going into this movie without knowing a thing about it and I’ll keep it that way for anyone who hasn’t seen it. Just know that it is beautiful and poignant and touching. It’s somewhat of a simple movie but I think that’s where the bulk of its beauty lies. This is, at its heart, a story about life changing friendships and I think we all need a story like that.
