What are Handbells and Chimes?

Handbells are percussion imstruments that are used in orchrestra, choir, and ceremonies. This beautiful instrument was made by Robert and William Cor the brothers in Aldbourne, Wiltshire, England, between 1696 and 1724.

The Chimes are also beautiful percussion instruments that are used in orchrestra, choir, and ceremonies just like bells. The origin of chimes is hard to explain because there are various versions made in various places for example there are choir chimes, melody chimes, tone chimes and many more but most common version is the the handchime made by Toby Harris Smith in 1977 in England.

How to Ring a Bell and Chime

It is not hard to hold and ring a bell and chime, it just takes time to get the technique down.

To hold a bell all you have to do is grab around the handle or in the handbell buisness we call the collar like in the picture but you don't put your fingers inbetween the collar. But before you even grab the collar you have to put on gloves because if you touch the brass part of the bell with your bare-hand the toxins and chemicals on your hand will eat at the brass and eventually break it. So you have to get gloves preferabaly thin one with a grip dots. Now to ring you have to keep the cup of the bell up and extend your arm, but while you extend you will go down and then up like you arm is extending around a football. You also have tp add a flick of the wrist so you can get the hammer inside the bell to hit the brass.

To hold a chime you just to do the same thing like a bell, just grab around the handle, but unlike the bells you don't have to wear gloves. Since the chimes are made out of ceramic the toxins in your hands won't hurt the chime. Now to ring you all you have to do is the same thing like the bell.

How Not to Hold the Insturments

There are a lot of techniques to ring a bell or chime but the best sounding and best looking are the examples I previoulsy showed.

This is a technique used by professionals but it is a dangerous method because the ringer can lose a bell if it slipped and then you got a broken bell. Also he isn't wearing gloves so even though he has more grip he is damaging the bell.

This is another technique used by pros, but the way he is holding the chime on the left is wrong because he will have to move his hand to the side and normally and when he actually does that it will look messy and sloppy.

Finally now that you know how to ring you can see what you will be ringing to. There are many octaves but too many to explain but they all have one thing in common there are all read the same and will be as easy saying the pittsburg penguins suck.
