There are many variations of martial arts:
Martial arts originated as a means of self-defense or combat. Over many years, this self-defense evolved into a type of sport. It dates all the way back to the 6th century BCE when Chinese general Sun Tzu wrote The Art of War, a treatise on military strategy. Martial arts then spread to different parts of the world with other countries developing their own style of martial arts, such as Japan creating Judo and Karate. Its appearance around the world, like in movies, helped it gain popularity. Certain style can be a competitive sport. But overall, it's a great form of combat.
Every martial art specializes in forms of movement, which is key. It's in the way we strike, block and counter, and even grappling. It's always important on how you move. It must be efficient and effective, meaning it must have a strong effect and be purposeful. You always want to be aware of your distance. Closing the distance between an oppenent is helpful for when you prepare to strike. It helps also to understand how far they can reach, so that when you defend you want to spread your distance. It also creates space to set up combos. Without balance you can't quickly move around. Always try to stay light on your feet so you can block or counter a move, or even perform a move on the opponent. To add on to that, if you don't have balance it's easy for them to knock you over and score. Control is a major factor. If you do not have control or can't handle your speed and power, you could severely injure your opponent in a sparring match. So make sure of that becausee safety is important when it comes to any sport.
