The piano is a keyboard instrument in which the strings are struck with wooden mallets coated with a softer material. It is played by using the keys with the fingers and thumbs of both hands, and the keys causing the hammers to strike the strings. It was invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori in Italy around 1700.
