Sanrio started as a small company located at tokyo in Aug 10, 1960, The name wasnt always Sanrio when Shintaro Tsuji started the company the first name was Yamanashi Silk Center which at first was a company selling silk, they started to produce rubber sandals with cute designs on them which the idea was a success their sales started to increase so they hired cartoonists to produce more kawaii designs as they started to sell afforable gifts with cute characters they renamed their company to Sanrio in 1969. They soon created a gate gift shop with their first Hellokitty item a mini handheld coinpurse with Hellokitty on it, Her name used to be the white kitten which was changed in 1974 to kitty white but her nickname was hellokitty as she gained alot of popularity she resulted in being sanrios mascot.
