Strategy

To beat this boss I recommend full lead/Iron gear. For accesories, I would use a warding shackle, cloud in a bottle/ sandstorm in a bottle, a band of regeneration, and an aglet. For a weapon, I recommend a boomstick with at least 1 stack of musket balls. Basically, just dodge the best you can and keep shooting. Since the boomstick has very low accuracy, it is better to be closer to the boss. When this boss gets down to half health, it turns into the second form. After you beat this boss, you usually fight either the Eater of Worlds or the Brain of Cthulhu. Another important thing about this boss is that if you have 200 or more life, have 10 or more defense, have at least 3 NPCs, and have not beaten this boss on the world yet, it has a 1 in 3 chance to spawn each night. If it will spawn that night you will recive a message at the beginning of the night that says "You feel an evil presence watching you..." and in 20/40 seconds it will spawn.
