Chess is an abstract strategy game and involves no hidden information. It is played on a square chessboard with 64 squares arranged in an eight-by-eight grid. ... The object of the game is to checkmate the opponent's king, whereby the king is under immediate attack (in "check") and there is no way for it to escape it is called as checkmate.
A pawn is the most common chess piece on the chessboard. Chess sets contain sixteen total pawns. Each player begins the game with eight pawns set up on the second rank directly in front of the major pieces: rooks, bishops, knights, queen, and king.
The rook moves horizontally or vertically, through any number of unoccupied squares (see diagram). The rook cannot jump over pieces. As with captures by other pieces, the rook captures by occupying the square on which the enemy piece sits. The rook also participates, with the king, in a special move called castling.
The knight moves unconventionally compared to other chess pieces.Knights move in an “L-shape”—that is, they can move two squares in any direction vertically followed by one square horizontally, or two squares in any direction horizontally followed by one square vertically.Knight can “jump over” other pieces.
The bishop chess piece moves in any direction diagonally. Chess rules state that there is no limit to the number of squares a bishop can travel on the chessboard, as long as there is not another piece obstructing its path.
The queen can be moved any number of unoccupied squares in a straight line vertically, horizontally, or diagonally, thus combining the moves of the rook and bishop. The queen captures by occupying the square on which an enemy piece sits.
The king can move one square in any direction (orthogonally or diagonally), and also has a special move known as "castling". If a player's king is threatened with capture, it is said to be in check, and the player must remove the threat of capture on the next move.
