Thanksgiving Day, is the national Day celebrated on the 25th Thursday of November in the United States. It originated as the harvest celebration. Prayer has been observed nationally on and off since 1789, after meeting requested the declaration by George Washington. It has been observed as the national vacation each year since 1863, when, during the English Civil War, chairman Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the general time of prayer and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens, to be observed on this final Thursday in November. Together with Christmas and this New Year, grace is the portion of the wider fall/winter holiday period in the U.S.
Our family tradition for Thanksgiving is we have my entire family, my moms side, dads side, cousins and family friends over to a huge meal that my mom fixes all on her own. She decorates the house and sets proper tables and we go around and say what we are thankful for.
