Sushi is said to have originated in China between the 5th and the 3rd centuries BC, as a means of preserving fish in salt. Narezushi, the original form of sushi, has been made in South East Asia for centuries, and nowadays, there are still traces of it in some parts.
Modern sushi that we eat today was invented in Japan by Hanaya Yohei. He invented modern-day sushi around the end of the edo period in the mid 1800s.
There are many different types of sushi. My personal favorite is the california roll. The california roll consists of imitation crab meat, rice, seaweed, avacado, rice, and cucumber.
There are about 5 different types of sushi. The first one is Uramaki, which is where the rice is on the outside and the seaweed is in the inside with the other ingredients. The second kind is Temaki, which is rolled up seaweed with ingredients sticking out of the top of the cone. The third type is Maki, which is where the seaweed is on the outside and the rice is on the inside with the other ingredients. The forth type is Sashimi, which is just different meats and fish with no rice or seaweed. The final type is Nigiri, which is thin slices of usually raw fish layed over a clump of rice. These are the main types of sushi and the ingredients inside of them can vary.
If you have never had sushi you should go try some! They have something for everyone!
