El Coco or also known as Coca, Cucuy, Cucu and many more names is a mythical ghost monster who is similar to the bogey man. The legend is often told to young misbehaving children to make them listen. It is told that the Coco will come to the childs house and make them disappear. The folktale originated in northern Portugal and Galicia. The Coco is known as many names but in New Mexico and Colorado this monster is known as "The Coco Man". Many families will tell their misbehaving children that the Coco will come and eat them or take them away to a distant land where they will not be able to return. The story of the Coco has been told since the 17th century.
