The History of Books
The first book ever created was back in the 4th century B.C.E., though sources say it could be from farther back, as it can be hard for archeologists and scientists to keep track of
They started off as:
- Ancient scrolls made of papyrus
- The idea spread to many nearby inhabiting civilizations
Then in the 1st century of Rome, they made codices. They were similar to books, lacking the charm and characteristics of a spine or title, but still, they seemed to be as close as this time period could offer
The oldest book in the world is the Diamond Sutra - despite its name, it doesn’t quite glisten
Some say the oldest novel on the other hand is The Tale of Genji , by Mursaki Shikibu
In 1935, all the money it took was about six-pence for one book, compared to the range of money for books today: about five dollars for a cheap, used paperback to dozens of dollars for hardcovers and rarely-printed special editions
Books have done and continue to do a number of tasks
- They spread information and educate individuals on a wide range of topics
- They offer an escape into fantastical worlds, letting readers glide off into a city of glitter or a place of mild lights and spectacles
- They act as manuscripts for some of the most popular movies! Click here!
- They help people with verbal and written communication, generally bettering society as a whole, helping with improving writing skills or style
