Generating power
Burning fossil fuels for electricity and heat releases harmful emissions like carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide, contributing to climate change. Renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power emit minimal greenhouse gases and pollutants, making them a cleaner and more sustainable option. Transitioning to renewables helps combat climate change by reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and their detrimental environmental impact.
Manufacturing goods
The manufacturing industry releases a lot of greenhouse gases, which contribute to climate change. This happens because factories and machines used in manufacturing need energy, often obtained by burning fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas. These fuels release gases that trap heat in the atmosphere. Additionally, the materials used in manufacturing, such as plastics and textiles, are often made from chemicals derived from fossil fuels. Overall, the manufacturing industry is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, making it a significant factor in climate change.
Deforestation
Cutting down forests to make space for farming, pastures, or other purposes leads to the release of stored carbon from trees. This contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, which cause climate change. Every year, around 12 million hectares of forest are destroyed, resulting in a significant loss of carbon absorption ability. Deforestation, along with changes in land use like agriculture, accounts for about one-fourth of global greenhouse gas emissions. By preserving forests, we can help maintain nature's ability to capture carbon and reduce the impact of climate change.
Transportations
Most cars, trucks, ships, and planes run on fossil fuels. That makes transportation a major contributor of greenhouse gases, especially carbon-dioxide emissions. Road vehicles account for the largest part, due to the combustion of petroleum-based products, like gasoline, in internal combustion engines. But emissions from ships and planes continue to grow. Transport accounts for nearly one quarter of global energy-related carbon-dioxide emissions. And trends point to a significant increase in energy use for transport over the coming years.
Producing and powering human needs
Food production and building energy consumption are major contributors to climate change. Producing food releases greenhouse gases through activities like deforestation, livestock digestion, and the use of fertilizers and energy for farming. Buildings emit significant amounts of greenhouse gases due to their reliance on coal, oil, and natural gas for heating, cooling, lighting, and appliances. These factors contribute significantly to climate change by releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
Overusing of materials
Our everyday choices and actions at home, including our energy use, transportation, diet, and waste disposal, all contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. The things we buy, like clothing, electronics, and plastics, also have an impact. Household activities are a significant source of global greenhouse gas emissions. It's important to recognize that our lifestyles play a crucial role in affecting the planet, and the wealthiest individuals have a greater responsibility as they generate more emissions than the poorest 50% of the population.
