Super Mario 64 |

IGN:
Nintendo 64's early flagship title demonstrates the power of the hardware as well as the creative genius of Miyamoto and team. Not only does the game obliterate every platformer before it in terms of visual finesse, it plays just as well if not infinitely better than previous 2D incarnations of the Mario franchise. 3D worlds are huge and cleverly laid-out so that there's never a dull moment. Secrets play a huge part of the experience, recapturing the classic gameplay style of the series. In fact, this game is exactly as one might hope it would be: Mario in 3D. More freedom, more space, more options, better graphics, improved and elaborated control schemes -- it's all there. Possibly the greatest videogame achievement ever. Don't rent. Buy.

My Opinion:
Super Mario 64 marks Mario's transition from the simple 2d landscapes, to these massive 3d worlds and boy is it fun. There's lots to explore, the controls feel fluid for its time, a diverse moveset for mario, and there's so much creativity in the design of the game itself. On top of this, Super Mario 64 really shook up how cameras worked in 3d games in a good way. Before cameras would stay fixed behind your player which was suboptimal but what Nintendo did here was to create an ever changing camera (that appears to be Lakitu) that changes angles depending on Mario's position. This simple advancement makes the game so much more incredible. This is one game that you should not miss out on!

The Legend Of Zelda: Breath of The Wild |

IGN:
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a masterclass in open-world design and a watershed game that reinvents a 30-year-old franchise. It presents a wonderful sandbox full of mystery, dangling dozens upon dozens of tantalizing things in front of you that just beg to be explored. I’ve had so many adventures in Breath of the Wild, and each one has a unique story behind what led me to them, making them stories on top of stories. And even after I’ve spent more than 50 hours searching the far reaches of Hyrule, I still manage to come across things I haven’t seen before. I’ll easily spend 50 to 100 more trying to track down its fascinating moments.

My Opinion:
Breath of the wild is truly a breath of fresh air for video games. This game is a true master piece with such an amazing open world experience, memorable NPCs, and fluid progression system that allows people of all skill types to be challenged. This is one of my all time favorite games as there are secrets everywhere so with every replay, I'm able to discover a bit more. The only thing that takes slightly away from the experience is how that several of the bosses are surpringly easy with cheese methods.

Splatoon 2 |

IGN:
There’s a lot to love in Nintendo’s second iteration of its quirky shooter, especially the way Splatoon 2 emphasizes splatting the ground just as much as it does inking your opponents. The new additions to its single-player campaign and multiplayer modes are a step in the right direction, but it still has some work to do to make joining online games and voice chat less of a hassle. Still, with an addicting new Salmon Run co-op mode and the promise of free updates like the ones that helped the original Splatoon come into its own, I expect Splatoon 2 to keep me hooked. My Opinion:
I really enjoy splatoon 2 as it's such a great example of Nintendo putting their own spin on gaming categories that they haven't explored yet, this one being the shooter genre.
Though the game's normal single player is a bit lackluster, the writing in it more than makes up thanks to the charming characters, witty dialogue, ever present puns, and an incredibly theatrical finale. In addition to this, I believe the single player mode does and incredibly good job at serving as a tutorial for the game. Sure there's the actual tutorial but it does not do nearly as much as the single player campaign does. The online aspect of splatoon 2 is where it really shines. All the weapons are incredibly unique and often were inspired by something in real life. See that umbrella? It's actually a gun! There are just so many weapons that it's hard to find one that doesn't suit your playstyle. On top of this, the balancing is phenomenal. In the entire history of splatoon 2 I can only think of one weapon that was broken *cough* ballpoint splatling *cough* which helps make sure your online experience is ever pleasant. Unlike most other shooters, splatoon is about controlling zones and not earning kills which is something I really like and leads to creative game modes, playstyles, and team formations. Couple this with the stealth aspect and you have a game that is a shooter but feels so different and spectacular. The way that certain weapons are handled are also interesting. For example, chargers, splatoon's snipers, do not have infinite range. They still have 1 shot potential but it requires you to fully charge them up. By doing this the game stays fair and just. In addition to this, Salmon Run exists which is a great PvE mode where you get to work with 3 other players to survive an onslaught of salmonoid critters that have a fair amount of variety. What I really like though is that the weapon you get is randomized so you need to be able to adapt and learn new ways to play the game which helps better your understanding of the game in general. Sure you may not like the random weapons but I believe that it makes you better as a player as you understand the playstyle of other weapon types so you can know how to play against them in online play. And we can't forget the DLC. Octo expansion is one of the best done DLCs I've seen. $20 and you've got a new story mode with 88 new challenges (80 stations, 8 mini-levels) that have a great amount of challenge and focus on a specific aspect of the game. It really helps you over all when playing online which is great. It even bundles in quite a few cosmetics that are ever pleasant. I do not wish to spoil any of the details but the Octo expansion does a really great job at telling a story and adding in extra bits of lore that does not only help enhance the Octo expansion, but betters out knowledge of the splatoon universe as a whole. The soundtrack in splatoon is just insanely good. They have rock, pop, techno, it covers all the genres and puts it in the unique inkling style which I find fun. On top of this, each of the tracks are played by an actual band within the splatoon universe and just like in real life, these bands change. For example, Squid Squad was a band in the original splatoon but in splatoon 2 the band broke up and one of the members formed a duo named Diss-Pair. The thought that went into this just truly makes it feel alive. Finally I'd like to talk a bit about how splatoon handles the lore of the game. Not much is told to us at the beginning but once you start playing the single player campaign you find "sunken scrolls". These sunken scrolls contain little bits of splatoon data such as the first great turf war or why splatoon 2 has different special weapons compared to the first one. I strongly believe that this was a great decision on Nintendo's side as this gives reason to explore the single player. These sunken scrolls give off so much lore that you can truly grasp how the splatoon world functions as it's just amazing. So there you have it, why I believe splatoon 2 is not just a good game, but a fantastic game. |
