Bubble tea, known as boba today, originated in Taiwan. The culture of boba originated in the late 80s', also known at the 1980s.

Originally, the founder, Liu Han-Chieh, came back from Japan and seemed to enjoy the idea of serving coffee in Japan, so he decided to introduce Taiwan to selling tea. Tea eventaulyl got be well known and milk tea was already fairly well known in Taiwan so eventually tea shops, so tea shops eventually began to add new flavors. At the time, the desert such as shaved ice and tapioca balls was very popular, so it was bound to happen with milk tea mixed with pearls, and that was how the addiction of boba was made! The idea of boba became so populated that tea shops began adding new fruit flavors and different types of boba in the bubble tea. Today, at every single town, city, or place there is always a boba place!
