A Round Up Of Norse Mythology
To truly understand any mythology you must get rid of what you think you know, for one Loki is not the Thors brother he's actually Odin's blood brother. For the most part the movies on Norse mythology are completely inaccurate.
Key Gods In Norse Myths
- Odin- the supreme deity of Norse mythology and the greatest among North gods, the all- father of the Aesir
- Frigg-paragon of beauty, love, fertility and feet she was the mighty queen of Asgard
- Balder-The child of Frigg and Odin, who was described as living heaven and earth
- Loki- Loki was a mischievous god who could shape-shift and can take up animalistic forms. He conceived a scheme to cause the death of Balder.
- Thor- Thor was Odin’s most widely-known son. He was the protector of humanity and the powerful god of thunder who wielded a hammer named Mjöllnir.
- Freya- Freya was one of the most sensual and passionate goddesses in Norse mythology. She was associated with much of the same qualities as Frigg: love, fertility and beauty.
- Freyr- Freyr was the god of fertility and one of the most respected gods for the Vanir clan- he was also the brother of Freya.
- Heimdall, known as the ‘shiniest’ of all gods due to him having the ‘whitest skin’, was a son of Odin who sat atop the Bifrost
- Hel- Hel was the goddess and ruler of the Norse underworld of the same name (also known as Helheim).
- Vidar- Vidar was another son of the supreme god and Grid (a giantess), and his powers were matched only by that of Thor.
- Vali- Vali was the son of Odin who avenged Balder’s death by killing Hod
Ragnarok
Ragnarok is the cataclysmic destruction of the cosmos and everything in it – even the gods. Someday – whenever the Norns decree it – there shall come a Great Winter. Mankind will become so desperate for food and other necessities of life that all laws and morals will fall away.The following battles will be fought:
- Odin will be swallowed by Fenrir.
- Vidar will avenge his fathers death and kill Fenrir by stepping on Fenrir's jaw and spliting it all the way down through his tail. That's when Ragnarok ends.
- Thor kills Jormungandr, but then dies from his wounds and the poison after taking nine steps.
- Garm bites off Tyrs other hand and he bleeds out, but not before he gives Garm a mortal wound, which does kill him.
- Both will inflict fatal wounds on each other, but Loki shall refuse to die until he sees the destruction of the worlds which happened soon after. They both died next to each other.
Baldr, Hod, Hoenir, Magni, Modi, Njord, Vidar, Vali and the daughter of Sol are stated to survive Ragnarok. Vidar (who avenges Odin) and Vali who where unharmed by Surtr fire or the flood. Magni and Modi who will wield their father's(Thor) hammer, Mjolnir, will also live. Njord is stated to return to Vanaheim at "the doom of man" which has been interpreted as Ragnarok, Sol(who dies) gives birth to a daughter who follow her path in the new world.
