The highest selling metal band of all time with over 125 million records, San Francisco band Metallica are probably the most mainstream one out there (my grandma knows them and she isn't into metal). If you don't know them, you're living under the heaviest rock in the universe. They are the only other metal band in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, inducted in 2009.
