Underhand Serve
Getting into Position
- Get your feet in position. Put your non-dominant foot in front facing forward. Put your dominant foot in the back facing slightly out.
- Ready the ball. Cup the ball with your non-dominant hand. Make sure the ball is balanced so it won't fall out or wobble in your hand.
- Lower the ball. Place your arm that's holding the ball to the side of your body in front of your hitting arm. The ball should be at the time height as your mid-thigh.
- Lean your shoulders forward. Keep your upper back straight and move your hips back as you bring your shoulders towards the ball. You gain more control when you do this because you get closer to the ball.
Aiming the ball
- Choose a place for the ball to land. When playing on a team, you'll want the ball to go where you aim it, so practice your aim!
- Adjust your angle to the net. If you aim to the left, your shoulders should point left and your back foot slightly right. If you aim to the right, your shoulders should point right and your back foot slightly left.
- Close your hitting hand and make it a fist. Move your arm so that your fist is facing upwards.
Hitting the ball
- Choose the arc of the ball. The arc of the ball is determined on where the contact point is. The ideal contact point is slightly below the center of the ball, to give it an upward trajectory so it can make it over the net.
- Move your hitting aim straight back. After moving your arm back, swing your arm forward and hit the ball firmly with your fist. Right before you make contact with the ball, speed up your swing.
- Whil swinging yur arm, step forward. Your weight should be shifted to your front foot. Move your entire body forward and up, so the ball can go over the net.
- Follow through with your arm. Your arm should continue in the same upward motion after you hit the ball. Keep your arm straight and swing it up to a height near or slightly above your head.
Congratulations! You now know the steps on how to do an underhand serve.
