1. Wolves are the largest members of the dog family.
2. The Grey Wolf is known as the Timber Wolf in North America and the White Wolf in the Arctic, or more generally as the Common Wolf.
3. Wolves are legendary because of their spine-tingling howl, which they use to communicate. A lone wolf howls to attract the attention of his pack, while communal howls may send territorial messages from one pack to another. Some howls are confrontational. Calls may be answered by rival packs. Much like barking domestic dogs, wolves may simply begin howling.

• There are two species of wolves in North America: the gray wolf (Canis lupus) and the red wolf (Canis rufus). The critically endangered red wolf is limited in its current range to a small portion of coastal North Carolina, but once roamed throughout the Southeast and much of the Eastern and South-central United States and north into Eastern Canada. With about 100 red wolves living in the wild, it is one of the world’s most endangered canids and is on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species. Scientists are divided over whether another wolf, known as the eastern wolf, is a separate species (Canis lycaon) or another gray wolf subspecies (Canis lupus lycaon).
• Canis lupus arabs - Arabian Wolf The Arabian wolf is a subspecies of gray wolf which lives on the Arabian peninsula and is the smallest-sized wolf known. It’s adapted to desert life where food can be scarce, and therefore eats a varied omnivorous diet as well as carrion.
• Canis lupus signatus - Iberian Wolf The Iberian wolf, also known as Spanish wolf, inhabits the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, which includes Portugal and Spain. Signatus is Latin for “marked”, which describes the Iberian wolf’s signature white markings around their lips and mouth and dark stripes running down their legs.
• Canis lupus lupus - Eurasian Wolf Also known as the common wolf, Carpathian wolf, steppe wolf, Tibetan wolf, or Middle Russian forest wolf, the Eurasian wolf is a subspecies of the gray wolf native to Europe and the forest and steppe zones of Asia.
• Canis lupus pallipes - Indian Wolf The Indian wolf is a subspecies of gray wolf that lives in Southwest Asia and the Indian subcontinent. While similar in structure to other gray wolf subspecies, it is smaller with a slighter build with shorter fur and little to no undercoat due to the warmer climate it calls home. In literature, it was Indian wolves that adopted and raised Mowgli in Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book.
