A leaf is an organism that grows above ground. Its main function is to exchange gas and produce food for the plant through a process called photosynthesis. Different plants have various shapes and sizes of leaves.
A leaf usually has a broad flat part known as the blade. The blade is attached to the petiole, which is a stemlike leafstalk. The blade of a leaf can hold up its shape because it has hollow tubes called veins. The veins of the leaf are blood vessels of the leaf. The vessels of a leaf carry food and water for the leaves. Narrow leaves usually have parallel veins while broad leaves usually have veins that look like a net.
Unlike animals, the leaves of a plant make their own food. To clarify, the roots of a plant absorb water from the ground and take in a gas known as carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. These substances are turned into food- glucose and starch- by using sunlight energy in a process known as photosynthesis.
