Famous Ballets
These are some famous ballets with their brief synopsis'
- Swan Lake: Swan Lake is one of the most famous ballets of all time. It is about a prince that falls in love with the queen of the swans, Odette. He loves her and only true love change Odette back into a human. The sorcerer that made her a swan wants her to stay a swan, though. He sends Odile, his daugter (usually played by the same dancer as Odette) to try to make the prince fall in love with her. Prince Siegfried falls in love with Odile and intends to marry her. It breaks Odette's heart. In the last act, Odette tells Seigfreid that the only way she won't be a swan, is to be killed. Odette kills herself and the prince, unable to live without her, kills himself too. They reunite in death.
- Don Quixote: Don Quixote is also a very famous ballet. Not many companies do it anymore, though. It is about Kitri, who is secretly in love with a barber, is to be married to Gamache, a rich nobleman. She doesn't love him back so she runs away. Don Quixote then arives in town, sees Kitri, and believes that she is Dulcinea. Kitri and her lover run away again. Don Quixote then accidentaly attacks a windmill and falls into a deep sleep. He dreams about Kitri, still believing that she is Dulcinea. In the end, Kitri and Basilio are caught and marry each other.
- Romeo and Juliet: Romeo and Juliet is my favorite ballet. It is so beautiful and when I saw it, I couldn't stop watching. Romeo, son of Montague, and Juliet, daughter of Capulet, are supposed to be sworn enemies. When Romeo attends a ball, in secret, that Juliet's parents are hosting, they meet and Romeo is instantly entranced by her. After the ball ends, Romeo comes back and meets Juliet on her balcony. They dance and they confess their love to each other. The next day, Juliet sends her nurse to tell Romeo that she wants to marry him, secretly. They are married and one of Romeo's friends is killed. Meanwhile, Juliet's parents insist that she marry a rich man, Paris. When she refuses, they threaten to disown her. Distraut, she asks the Frair to help her. He tells her that he has a vial of sleeping potion that will send her into a deep sleep, tricking people to believe that she is dead. She takes it and asks him to tell Romeo. She goes back to her room and drinks the potion. Everyone believes that she is dead, including Romeo because he did not get the message. He is so distressed that at the mourge, he poisons himself, being unable to live without Juliet. Directly afterwards, Juliet wakes up and find Romeo dead. She is so sad that she has lost him, that she stabs herself. The two are reunited in death.
- Lastly, another well-known ballet, Coppelia. This ballet is about two young adults, Franz and Swanhilda. They are in love with each other, until Franz sees Coppelia for the first time. Dr. Coppelius, a secretive doctor, drops a key to his shop and Swanhilda finds it. Swanhilda sees that Coppelia is actually a life-like doll. Swanhilda then takes place of the doll and makes the doctor believe that his doll has come to life. He realizes that is was Swanhilda and she flees with Franz. In the thrid and final act, Swanhilda and Franz are happily married.
