Species
There are many different species of sharks, ranging from a dwarf lanternshark to the gigantic whale shark. More recognizable known sharks like great white sharks or bull sharks. Then there are more unique sharks like hammerhead sharks and goblin sharks. Each species of have different qualities that make them sharks
- Great White Shark
- Great white sharks are the largest predatorial fish on Earth. On average they can grow to 15 feet in length and weigh over 5,000 pounds.Their torpedo like shape helps them swim almost 15 mph. The mouth of a great white is lined with over 300 teeth all aranged in several rows. Their organs are able to sense the electromagnetic fields that are generated bgy their prey. They often get a bad repuation from factors like their appearence or how they are potrayed in media.
- Bull Shark
- Bull sharks are considered the most dangerous sharks in the world because of their aggressive nature. They live near populated shorelines and are one of the three sharks to most likely attack a human (great whites and tiger sharks being the other two). They get their name from their blunt snout and tendency to head-butt their prey. They are fast and agile predators that eat almost anything. These sharks are shrinking in numbers, humans are hunting them for their hides and oils.
- Goblin Shark
- Goblin sharks get their name from their unusually shaped jaw and nose looking simialr to . They live near the bottom of the ocean and prey on small squids and fish. The shape of their jaw helps them sneak up on their victims. Its jaw can snap up almost three inches forward. They can grow up to 12 inches in length and weigh around 460 pounds. Not a lot is known about them since they live so far below the oceans surface.
- Mako Shark
- Mako sharks are very active and dangerous sharks. Their appearence is very slender and their snouts are long a pointed. Most adults can reach 14 icnhes in length and can sometiems exceed 1,000 pounds. They are classfied into two groups, shortfin and longfin. Shortfin mako sharks can be found in all tropical and temperate seas, while longfin mako sharks can be found in tropical seas all over the world. Both prey on smaller fish like mackerel and herring
- Whale Shark
- Whale sharks are the largest marine animal alive today. Though they are usually classified as sharks they do not follow any of the usual shark prejudice, such as being agressive or dangerous. A whale shark will never eat a human since it is a filter-feeding animal. The will eat small fish and plantkon floating around in the ocean. Their average length is 32 inches but the largest ever recorded was 61 inches.
