This section will include the following plate types:

Special-UX

Special-UX plates have been confirmed since 1957. Special-UX plates are used for trucks and trailers with permanently mounted special equipment, qualifying for reduced-fee registrations. Only one pair of Special-UX plates is known to exist, not even being shown in the ALPCA archives except 1957. This type has been discontinued since 2004.

Special-X

Special-X license plates were first issued as driver education plates (not confirmed) in 1956. Later on, they followed 5-year cycles and were issued to organizations, like some buses, red cross vehicles, special vehicles in parades, and fire department vehicles.

Special-Z

Special-Z license plates are issued to excavating vehicles in transit and seasonal equipment, such as carnival rides. They have been issued since at least 1967, and were discontinued in 2004.
UPDATE JANUARY 2020: I found a guide on Wisconsin license plates from 1959. It listed special-Z license plates there! However, it is not known what the colors would have been... though it likely would have been white on maroon.

After 1979, plates gained weight codes. 1978 plates did have weight stickers, but they weren't part of the number.
